The spacecraft will be launched into space using the Falcon 9 launch vehicle next year
For the first time in history, the American space company SpaceX will accept payment in Dogecoin to launch a 40-kilogram satellite into space as part of the DOGE-1 lunar mission of the Canadian company Geometric Energy Corporation. The satellite will be delivered to lunar orbit using a Falcon 9 launch vehicle.
SpaceX’s vice president of commercial sales, Tom Ochinero, said the mission will demonstrate the use of cryptocurrency outside of Earth orbit and lay the foundation for interplanetary commerce. This information was confirmed on Twitter by SpaceX CEO Elon Musk. According to him, the satellite will be launched next year.
Dogecoin has also been selected as the unit of account for all transactions between SpaceX and Geometric Energy Corporation for the DOGE-1 lunar mission. Dogeis trading at $ 0.55 as of 10:20 AM ET. The price of the Doge plummeted after SpaceX CEO Elon Musk took part in the Saturday Night Live comedy show and mentioned Dogecoin. On May 9, the digital coin fell to $ 0.41, although a day earlier, the coin peaked at $ 0.73.
On April 1, Elon Musk wrote on Twitter that SpaceX would literally send Dogecoin to the moon. After that, the entrepreneur did not specify whether this statement was a joke or whether his company was really going to send an altcoin to an Earth satellite. After the publication of this tweet, the value of Dogecoin increased by 20% in just half an hour.
